In order to achieve fusion power on earth, hydrogen isotopes are heated to tens of millions of degrees. Using high magnetic fields, the plasma can reach sufficient density for reaction to take place. Under these conditions fusion can produce vast amounts of energy from a very small amount of fuel. The amount of fuel that can be extracted from a glass of water could power a home for a year.
